Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced, hands-on Director of Accounting to lead the organization's accounting and financial operations.
This position requires more than traditional nonprofit accounting experience. The successful candidate will bring a strong understanding of real estate, construction accounting, job costing, fund accounting, and GAAP, along with the ability to manage the general ledger and ensure the accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial statements.
The Director of Accounting will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, audits, internal controls, property and construction-related accounting, and a small accounting team. This individual will also serve as a key financial partner to the Executive Director, Board, and senior leadership team.
Key Projects
The Director of Accounting will play a significant role in several important initiatives, including:
- Supporting and helping lead an accounting/software conversion currently in process
- Preparing the organization for its upcoming audit
- Reviewing and strengthening general ledger accuracy and account reconciliation processes
- Improving accounting procedures, controls, reporting, and financial processes
- Supporting accurate accounting for construction, development, property, and project-related activity
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the organization's accounting and financial operations in accordance with GAAP
- Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger, ensuring transactions are properly recorded, reconciled, and reflected in accurate financial statements
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reporting
- Oversee fund accounting, including appropriate tracking and reporting of restricted and unrestricted activity
- Manage accounting related to real estate, construction projects, development activity, and property operations
- Oversee construction and job costing, including project budgets, costs, commitments, allocations, and budget-to-actual reporting
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes
- Oversee account reconciliations, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules
- Coordinate and support the organization's annual financial audit
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and documentation
- Manage financial compliance related to funding agreements, loans, bank covenants, affordability requirements, and other regulatory obligations
- Maintain financial documentation associated with properties, funding agreements, lending arrangements, and compliance requirements
- Identify accounting and financial risks and recommend process, system, and control improvements
- Supervise and develop the Accounting Manager and support a small accounting team
- Provide clear financial information and analysis to the Executive Director, Board, and senior leadership team
- Partner with lenders, auditors, funders, and other external financial stakeholders
- Participate as a member of the organization's senior leadership team and support strategic organizational initiatives
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred
- CPA preferred but not required
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with approximately 7+ years preferred
- At least 2 years of accounting leadership or senior management experience
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP
- Demonstrated experience managing a general ledger and producing accurate financial statements
- Strong experience with real estate accounting, construction accounting, and job costing
- Experience with fund accounting
- Experience in affordable housing, property management, nonprofit accounting, real estate development, construction, or a related environment strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of month-end close, financial reporting, budgeting, reconciliations, audits, and internal controls
- Knowledge of construction finance, project accounting, bank and loan covenants, and funding compliance
- Ability to identify accounting issues, research discrepancies, and improve processes
- Experience supporting or leading accounting system implementations or software conversions is highly desirable
- Experience working with Boards, executive leadership, auditors, lenders, and other external financial partners
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership skills
- High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and personal accountability
- Yardi experience preferred
- Bilingual capabilities are a plus
Ideal Candidate
The strongest candidate will be a hands-on accounting leader who understands how transactions flow through the general ledger and ultimately impact the financial statements. This individual should be equally comfortable reviewing detailed account activity, resolving accounting issues, managing an audit, overseeing construction and job costing, and discussing financial results with senior leadership.
Candidates with a strong combination of real estate, construction, job costing, fund accounting, GAAP, general ledger management, and accounting leadership experience will be especially well suited for this opportunity.
